Most common reasons for under-eye bags or dark circles:

  1. Loss of volume around the eyes.
  2. Loss of firmness and elasticity of the skin.
  3. Drooping of the eye fat “fat bags”.
  4. Issues with fluid drainage “fluid bags”.
  5. Discoloration of the skin due to pigmentation or blood vessels.

“Treatment with Hyaluronic acid fillers, biorevitalizing injectables, or tightening/firming loose skin can effectively reduce under-eye bags.”

Treatment options:

    1. Soluble hyaluronic acid fillers can be used to correct volume loss in the tear trough and the support points around the eyes, effectively addressing dark circles. The amount of filler needed depends on the degree of volume loss and the desired result.
    2. Endolifting – Using radiofrequency (RF) therapy, the deeper layers of the skin are briefly heated and then activated to produce new supporting cells such as collagen and elastin, resulting in long-lasting firmness and elasticity from within. In the innovative endolifting treatment, stimulation of the deeper skin layers is combined with volume restoration (hyaluronic acid fillers) or with bioactivating injections such as autologous growth factors (PRP) or other activating injectables.
    3. PlexR Plasma Therapy – In cases of sagging and wrinkled skin under the eyes, a skin-tightening treatment with plasma therapy (PlexR) can provide a beautiful solution. With PLEXR plasma therapy, small heat pulses are applied to the skin, creating a tightening effect and activating the skin to produce new collagen and elastin.
    4. Biostimulation – Injections with autologous stem cells, growth factors (PRP), and skin boosters stimulate the skin to produce new cells, making the skin firmer and more elastic. Products like RRS HA eyes are specifically developed to reduce pigmentation, improve moisture drainage, and enhance the skin quality under the eyes.

Does Botox help against eyebags?

These days, injectables such as fillers and Botox are commonly used to address a tired appearance. Under-eye bags are often most effectively treated by focusing on restoring skin quality and addressing volume loss. Botox can contribute to a fresher look by softening wrinkles around the eyes and creating a more open appearance.

How does a filler treatment work?

During an initial consultation, we discuss your desires and treatment options. Based on a few questions about your medical history, we determine if you qualify for a filler treatment.

Through a comprehensive analysis of your skin, we identify areas suitable for filler treatment and recommend products that may be suitable for your skin type.

Our focus at Doctor Brandt is on achieving a natural and subtle result. That’s why we often advise against over-treating in one session. You can always come back later for a touch-up.

During the initial consultation, our goal is to fully inform you about the treatment and the expected results. It’s important that your expectations align with the anticipated outcomes. We will always provide you with honest advice to collaboratively create a well-informed treatment plan.

A filler treatment is simple and typically lasts only 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated. About half an hour before the treatment, the assistant or the doctor will apply a numbing cream to the areas to be treated. Using a few strategic injections with a very thin needle, the doctor will add extra volume to the chosen areas until the desired effect is achieved. You will see immediate results.

To clearly document the results of the treatment, photos will be taken for your medical record.

After the treatment, you can resume your daily activities immediately. Please be aware that your skin may show slight swelling and redness. This will gradually diminish and should be gone within a few hours. The doctor will provide you with post-treatment tips.

In the days following the treatment, the effect may further enhance due to the filler’s moisture-absorbing nature. This achieves a healthy and voluminous effect that emphasizes certain parts of your face. The longevity of the filler’s filling effect depends on the region treated and the firmness of the gel used. On average, the filling effect of the filler can last 12-18 months.

The hyaluronic acid is naturally broken down by the body into its own substances. After this, you can repeat the treatment without any issues.

Frequently asked questions

A filler is, as the name suggests, a filling substance. It is a collective term widely used for temporary fillers applied to the face or body. The most commonly used fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid – a naturally occurring building block of the skin. In addition to Hyaluronic Acid, collagen-stimulating fillers such as Radiesse or Sculptra are also used.

The result of a filler treatment depends on the type of filler used and the skin layer in which it is placed. For example, a ‘firm filler’ in a deeper skin layer provides a lifting effect on deeper wrinkles, while a ‘soft filler’ in a superficial skin layer softens shallow wrinkles. For an optimal result, a combination of different types of fillers in various skin layers is often applied.

For a filler treatment, usually only local anesthesia is applied with an injection or a numbing cream. Depending on the type of treatment, the most effective option for a comfortable experience will be suggested. If you find it very nerve-wracking or are afraid of needles, please let us know, and we can work together to make the treatment as pain-free as possible.

Fillers like Hyaluronic Acid and Radiesse are naturally broken down by the body over time. On average, results are visible for about a year, gradually diminishing. If you prefer to monitor the results, you can work with the doctor throughout the year to identify areas where a ‘touch-up’ may be beneficial. In some cases, with more robust fillers, results can last for several years.

The recovery after a filler treatment is generally mild. After the procedure, there might be some local mild swelling, redness, or discomfort – this is quite normal and usually resolves on its own within 24-72 hours. Occasionally, a small bruise may occur during the injection, but it typically fades within a few days. Significant bruising is rare. Generally, it’s barely noticeable immediately after the treatment. Within a few days, the filler settles into the skin and may attract some additional water, enhancing the effect over time. Most people experience the ‘wow-effect’ after 2-4 weeks.

A treatment with fillers has a favorable risk profile compared to surgical procedures. Like any medical procedure, there are risks to consider. The most common problems are not severe and easily correctable. If a filler ends up in the wrong layer of the skin, a small bump or swelling may occur. This is often easily corrected with a solvent, especially with soluble hyaluronic acid fillers. The risk of bumps due to fillers is very small when choosing an experienced cosmetic doctor with the KNMG certification.

In extremely rare cases, there may be an allergic reaction or infection (less than 0.1%). Also, in very exceptional cases, a filler may obstruct blood vessel flow. In such cases, the doctor can usually inject a solvent with targeted ultrasound to restore blood flow. Dr. Brandt has extensive knowledge of treating complications and has contributed as an author to the Dutch field norm for non-body-own degradable fillers.
